Why Study Pre-Veterinary Medicine?
The pre-veterinary medicine program prepares students for entry into veterinary school. This rigorous program places emphasis on anatomy, physiology, chemistry, organic chemistry, physics and histology. Students learn how healthy systems operate and how to identify and effectively assess problems when an animal experiences abnormalities.
Profession-Based Learning Experiences
With more than 26 labs in the Garrett-Strong Science Building and $3 million invested in state-of-the-art equipment in the Dean L. Hubbard Center for Innovation, students get multiple hands-on experiences to ensure they are prepared for veterinary school.
R.T. Wright University Laboratory Farm is a 448-acre facility that provides profession-based learning experience with livestock and crops.
New in 2021, the 29,000 square-foot Agricultural Learning Center (ALC) houses classrooms, laboratories, exposition and office spaces.

Preparation for Medical Programs
Northwest offers pre-professional courses of study which encompass many careers. In most instances, these courses have been compiled in conjunction with specific requirements of professional schools. Many professional schools require specific procedures in regard to entrance tests, application deadlines and interviews. Thus, students are encouraged to speak with faculty advisors in order to identify the best path for them to achieve their goal.
Students planning on applying to programs in veterinary medicine would be wise to select a major such as Comprehensive B.S. in Biology: Biomedical Track or the Animal Science (Pre-Veterinary Option). Both of these major programs should provide students with the necessary prerequisites for admission. Students that take the Biology path are encouraged to complete additional elective coursework in Animal Science to supplement their educational background.
In addition to coursework, students intending to apply to veterinary school will need to gain additional experience shadowing, observing, and working in the work environment or their chosen field. This experience should be gained throughout the student's undergraduate career.
