Why Major in Business Education?
The business education major provides hands-on, cutting-edge courses in the areas of business, technology, marketing, accounting and economics while providing the core principles of effective education. This major is designed to prepare students to teach at the secondary level (grades 9-12). The business education major is recognized nationally and by the state as an outstanding business education program, and Northwest is the only public institution in Missouri north of I-70 that offers a business education program.
At the high school level, teachers are trained to educate students on more specialized content such as the theories of business, marketing, accounting and technology. At the middle school level, teachers focus on the basics of keyboarding, computer applications, introduction to business and money management.
Minor in Business Education
A minor in business education provides fundamental knowledge and skills in implementing business and marketing at the secondary level (grades 9-12). This minor requires the completion of 36 credit hours.

Profession-Based Learning Experiences
Practicum courses are "clinical hours" in where students observe, teach and assist professional teachers at the high school level. Northwest students begin practicum courses as freshmen.
During their senior year, students observe teachers and professionals, prepare lesson plans and teach consecutive lessons for a semester-long placement.
Student Organizations
Pi Omega Pi is a national business teacher education honor society that recognizes students with high scholastic ability in business education. Eligibility requirements include interest in becoming a business educator; completion of three trimesters of college courses, including at least 15 hours in business or education subjects; and a 3.0 gradepoint average in business and education courses. Seniors are eligible to apply for the C&C Taylor scholarship.
Study Abroad
Study Abroad is an opportunity for students to apply hands-on international experience to their academic development. Faculty members provide short-term study programs that prepare students before, during and after the program. Two types of study abroad programs are available: faculty-led and traditional study abroad.
The traditional program may be a semester, summer or year-long program and is taught by Northwest’s international partner institutions.
